Sandy Spring Museum
April 1 – June 24, 2017.
This exhibition features new photo-collages, created during an artist residency at the Museum. This work is an unsentimental look at the cultural history of various locations in the Sandy Spring, Maryland area. Also on display will be photo-collages and videos that examine the cultural history of Washington, D.C. and Virginia sites. One piece is installed as public art outside Roots Market, 16800 Georgia Avenue, Olney.
Focusing on very specific sites, my artwork documents how the use of locations change over time. These changes reflect evolving attitudes towards race, ethnicity, and gender. How our social history progresses and transforms are important components of my work. I blend archival and contemporary photographs, along with historical newspaper articles, maps, advertisements, ephemera, and text into one final image for each site. Using layers of various opacities, I convey a sense that the past never goes away and continues to influence the present.
Opening reception April 1 from 2 to 4 pm. Panel discussion at 4 pm with myself, Eileen McGuckian, president of Montgomery Preservation, and Nicholas A. Redding, Executive Director of Preservation Services at Preservation Maryland.
